Amazon makes last-minute bid to acquire TikTok ahead of deadline: Report
,

According to three individuals familiar with the bid, Amazon.com has made a last-minute bid to acquire the short-form video app TikTok in its entirety, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump will weigh on Wednesday a final offer concerning TikTok before an April 5 deadline for the app to secure a non-Chinese buyer or risk being banned in the country, a White House official said on Tuesday.

ByteDance and TikTok did not have immediate comment, and Amazon refused to comment.

Amazon shares jumped 1.3% in a volume surge following the report.

Different stakeholders who have been engaged in the negotiations do not seem to be considering Amazon’s offer seriously, the New York Times reported.

The offer was made through an offer letter to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the report further stated.

The fate of the app that is used by almost half of all Americans has hung in the balance since a 2024 law, which was approved with near-unanimous bipartisan support, mandated ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19.

Washington contends that ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok makes it subject to the Chinese government, and Beijing might use the app to carry out influence operations against the United States and gather information on Americans.

Trump, shortly after being sworn in for a second term on January 20, signed an executive order attempting to postpone by 75 days the implementation of the law, giving TikTok a temporary reprieve to continue operating in the US.
